Types of Formulations

Giloy can be used in various forms like:
  • Kwatha (Decoction): 50-100 mL
  • Churna (Powder): 3-6 gm
  • Sattva (Starch collected from stems): 1-2 gm
  • Swarasa (Juice): 5-10 mL

Other formulations are also described in the classics such as Vati (Pills), Taila (Oils), Rasa-Ausadhi (Herbo-mineral preparations), Ghrita (Medicated Clarified Butter) , Arista (fermented Preparations) etc.

Churna (Powder)

  • Powder (Take the dried stems of Giloy
  • Crush and grind them to prepare fine powder
  • Keep it in an airtight container for further use
  • Dose: 3-6 gm

Kadha (Decoction)

  • Take the fresh/dry stem of Giloy
  • Cut fresh stem into small pieces/make coarse powder of the dry stem
  • Now, soak it in 8 times of water for overnight
  • Next day, boil it till the water becomes 1/4th of its initial volume
  • Filter it and use within the 30 min of its preparation
  • Dose: 50-100 ml
Agro-techniques

Vati (Pills)

  • Filtered Kadha of Giloy will be subjected to heat till it becomes semi-solid
  • Semi solid mass will be rolled into pills by using corn starch
  • Subject prepared pills for drying
  • Keep dried pills in an airtight container for further use

Giloy in other Traditional Medicine System

  • Unani: Giloy is used in powder form (dry stem powder) in a dose of 5-10 gm.
  • Siddha: Giloyis used in powder form and decoction at a dose of 3-5gm in case of powder and 30-50 ml twice daily in case of decoction.
  • Homeopathy: Giloy is used in the form of extract. Phytoconstituents of Giloy are extracted by using alcohol and chloroform as solvent. The final product has high strength and is known as a mother tincture. This mother tincture can be diluted further for therapeutic purposes.
